Group Vacations make for saving money

With the economy the way it is, people are planning vacations on a tighter budget.  They are more careful in spending their hard-earned money.  One way to get more vacation for less money is by traveling with others.  Whether it is a large group or just a few friends, you can save money by pooling your resources.

However, for all of the benefits, there can also be a downside in traveling with more people.  You have more personalities and more opinions and more people to please.  There is a way to plan a group vacation and make everyone happy and to come home with a few dollars left in your pocket.

The first thing in planning a group vacation is to have a meeting with everyone together.  Find out what everyone is expecting in this vacation.  Is it supposed to be relaxing or a lot of sightseeing?  Do they want to get away from it all or be in the center of everything?  It would be easiest to appoint one person to be the vacation planner and they can delegate tasks to others if they choose.  The planner needs to ask the questions and take notes for when they are making reservations later.

The vacation planner also needs to find out what everyone requires in accommodations, cost, what their budget is, any tourist attractions they want to see and anything else that is important to them on a vacation.  It’s at this stage that everyone must decide if their ideas are compatible with each other.  Not everyone can travel well together and you don’t want them to be unhappy during the trip.

Traveling with a group can be fun and save a lot of money but there are special considerations that must be thought of to make the vacation enjoyable for everyone.  If it is organized, it can become the preferred way to travel and provide a lot of great memories.

The secret in the travel business is the price per person goes down the bigger the condo you rent.  So find your group for your next vacation in Playa del Carmen and contact me for a special price on a 3 or 4 bedroom condo or click here to go to the website.

3 Tips for Traveling Stress-Free With Your Big Family in Playa del Carmen Mexico

March 20, 2012 Leave a comment

Playa del Carmen Mexico is a traveler’s paradise: swimming with the dolphins, Mayan ruins,  tropical birds, snorkeling, diving, catamaya sailing, zipline tours. It’s a fantastic place to take your big family of 5, 6, 7, or 8, but you will need to keep some key things in mind to avoid getting stressed out. Here are the top 3 tips for big families whose next destination is Playa del Carmen Mexico.

1. Avoid Hotel Rooms.

If you’ve ever tried to cram your big family into a single hotel room, you know it’s an impossible situation. Fortunately, in Mexico many hotels offer family suites, so if you book ahead you’ll be fairly comfortable. An even smarter option is to rent a condo. You’d be surprised at how affordable this is. Make sure you have enough rooms for everyone to spread out, and respect your older kids’ need for some privacy.

2. Plan Your Meals.

Some of your kids may be omnivores, others may be picky eaters. In Playa del Carmen, it’s easy to accommodate everyone’s preferences if you do a little pre-planning. When renting a condo, you can save money by cooking your own meals. Local shops and international grocery store chains like Wal-mart and Mega have an excellent selection of food. There’s a convenience store nearby as well for those quick items you may need.

3. Learn a little Spanish.

As anyone who’s traveled with a child knows, your little one is a great conversation-starter. Multiply that by 5, 6, 7, or 8, and you will have a hard time avoiding conversations about your family! But why would you want to? Chatting about your big family and encouraging your kids to mingle with local children is a fantastic way to make authentic connections and immerse yourself in the culture. Practice your language skills together as a family and enjoy the adventure.

As a travel destination, Playa del Carmen has something to offer kids and adults of all ages. If you follow these three tips, hang onto your sense of humor, and stay calm, you’ll have an unforgettable time exploring the colorful and picturesque city of Playa del Carmen Mexico with your big family.

Currency in Mexico – The Mexican Peso

January 3, 2012 1 comment

The local currency is the Mexican Peso.  Currently the exchange rate is 14 pesos for each US dollar and the rate changes daily.  This is fairly high as 11 or 12 is more the norm and prices in town have not adjusted to this high exchange rate so the US dollar can last a long way.

Peso bills come in denominations of $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1000. Coins come in $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20. There are 5, 10, 20, and 50-cent coins but merchants usually round payments to the nearest 50 cents or pesos because small fraction coins are scarce. All the currency is marked with the denomination so no guessing is necessary.

US dollars are accepted almost everywhere but the best exchange rate will be at a money exchange business or a bank. Stay away from the exchange at the airport, they will never give you favorable rates.  There are many ATM’s found in Playa del Carmen and I advise using the bank ATM’s and not the machines that stand alone on 5th avenue for example.  My concern would be if the machine failed, who would you call?

Most small businesses, restaurants, and hotels will accept debit and credit cards (Mastercard & Visa, not so much American Express) but preferable ask first especially at a restaurant. Most credit cards will charge a foreign exchange fee so do some research before you charge.  You want to advise your credit card company that you plan to visit another country before using your credit card as they may lock it down thinking that it was stolen.

Leave the checkbook at home, personal checks will not be accepted anywhere, not even in banks.  Take special care of the Peso bills too, even a slight tear or wet money will not be accepted.

Using a foreign currency can be a little challenging at first, I usually tell my US friends when reading the prices just remove the last number.  If you are buying a shirt for 90 pesos, take off the 0 and the shirt is less than $9 USD.  At the exchange of 14 the shirt is $6.42.

Condo Hotels Playa del Carmen is an American company doing business in Mexico and all hotel charges are collected in US dollars unless specified or requested in Pesos.

The Mayan Calendar and 2012

December 28, 2011 1 comment

The ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica developed accurate written calendars and of these, the calendar of the Maya is the most sophisticated. Its precision derives from the fact that it is based on an uninterrupted, continuous count of days reckoned from an initial zero day.  The Maya counted the Kin (days) in several independent calender counts that were synchronized. One of these counts included a 365 day calendar – HAAB

This calendar is based on the yearly journey of the Earth around the sun in 365 days.  The 365-day year was divided into 18 named months or Winal of 20 days each.  The overflow of 5 days was named Wayeb.  Each date is written using a number from 0 to 19 and a Winal name represented by a glyph except for the days of the Wayeb, which are numbered 0 to 4.

Now about 2012, December 21 will be the end of the Mayan Long Count calendar which will mark the end of a 5126-year era, not the end of the world!

If you are looking to celebrate this famous date, its best to fiesta in Playa del Carmen Mexico.  Book this date or another very popular date 12/12/2012 with Buigas Travel.  Book now and contact us for special rates. www.buigastravel.com
